Before reputation or reviews, one fact decides whether a hockey bet is placed safely: whether the operator holds a licence to serve customers in Great Britain.

Licensed operators join GAMSTOP and answer to the Commission; each must also establish who the customer is (name, address, age) prior to any first wager. Nothing of the kind has been identified for the customer, who still gives up protection.
